Windhoek Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed November 2024. Always verify with official government sources and the Namibian Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security before traveling, as requirements are subject to change.
Windhoek, the capital city of Namibia, serves as the primary entry point for international travelers visiting this southern African nation. Located at Hosea Kutako International Airport (approximately 45km east of the city center), most visitors will complete their immigration formalities here. Namibia maintains a relatively welcoming visa policy for tourists, with many nationalities enjoying visa-free access for short stays, making it an accessible destination for travelers from around the world. The immigration process in Windhoek is generally straightforward and efficient. Upon arrival, travelers proceed through immigration control where officers will verify travel documents, ask basic questions about the purpose and duration of visit, and stamp passports with the appropriate entry permit. After clearing immigration, visitors collect their luggage and proceed through customs declaration. The entire process typically takes 30-60 minutes depending on flight arrivals and queue lengths. Before traveling to Windhoek, ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended departure date from Namibia and contains at least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps. It's essential to have proof of onward travel (return ticket or ticket to next destination) and sufficient funds for your stay. Travelers should also verify current entry requirements, as policies can change, and consider any health requirements including vaccinations that may be necessary for entry.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Namibia offers visa-free entry to citizens of many countries for tourism and business purposes. The visa policy is designed to facilitate tourism while maintaining border security. Requirements vary based on nationality and purpose of visit.

Citizens of these countries can enter Namibia without obtaining a visa in advance for tourism or business purposes

All European Union member states United Kingdom United States Canada Australia New Zealand Japan Singapore South Korea Brazil Argentina South Africa Botswana Kenya Zimbabwe Switzerland Norway Iceland Russia United Arab Emirates Hong Kong SAR Malaysia

The actual duration of stay is determined by the immigration officer at the port of entry and is typically 90 days but may be less. Ensure you check the stamp in your passport. Extensions can be requested from the Ministry of Home Affairs in Windhoek. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months and have at least 2 blank pages.

Visa on Arrival

Availability of visa on arrival is limited and not guaranteed for all nationalities. It is strongly recommended to obtain a visa in advance if your nationality is not on the visa-free list to avoid potential entry denial.

Visa Required
Typically up to 90 days for tourist visas, varies by visa type

Citizens of countries not eligible for visa-free entry or visa on arrival must obtain a visa before traveling to Namibia

How to Apply: Apply at the nearest Namibian embassy or high commission in your country of residence at least 2-4 weeks before travel. Applications require completed forms, passport photos, proof of accommodation, return tickets, bank statements, and visa fee payment. Some countries may also apply through authorized visa application centers.

Processing times vary from 5-15 business days. Countries requiring visas include many African, Asian, and Middle Eastern nations not listed in visa-free categories. Check with your nearest Namibian diplomatic mission for specific requirements. Business visas require additional documentation including invitation letters from Namibian companies.

Arrival Process

The entry process at Hosea Kutako International Airport in Windhoek is organized and typically efficient. International flights arrive at the main terminal where passengers proceed through several checkpoints before entering Namibia.

1
Disembarkation and Health Screening
Exit the aircraft and follow signs to the arrivals hall. Depending on current health protocols, there may be temperature screening or health declaration forms to complete.
2
Immigration Control
Join the queue for immigration (separate lines for Namibian citizens/residents and foreign nationals). Present your passport, completed arrival card (if required), and supporting documents. The officer will ask questions about your visit, verify your documents, and stamp your passport with an entry permit indicating your allowed duration of stay.
3
Baggage Claim
Proceed to the baggage claim area and collect your luggage from the designated carousel. Trolleys are available. Report any missing luggage to your airline's desk in the arrivals hall.
4
Customs Declaration
Complete a customs declaration form if you have items to declare. Proceed through the customs checkpoint where officers may ask questions about your luggage. You may be asked to open bags for inspection, especially if you selected items to declare or are randomly selected for screening.
5
Exit to Arrivals Hall
After clearing customs, exit to the public arrivals area where you can arrange transportation, exchange currency, or meet your contacts. Airport shuttle services, taxis, and car rental agencies are available.

Documents to Have Ready

Valid Passport
Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay and contain at least 2 blank visa pages (preferably consecutive). Damaged passports may result in entry denial.
Proof of Onward/Return Travel
Printed or electronic confirmation of your departure from Namibia (return flight ticket, bus ticket to neighboring country, etc.). Immigration officers routinely ask for this.
Proof of Accommodation
Hotel booking confirmation, invitation letter from host, or address where you'll be staying in Namibia. Officers may request this to verify your plans.
Proof of Sufficient Funds
Bank statements, credit cards, or cash to demonstrate you can support yourself during your stay. While not always checked, officers have the right to request this.
Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate
Required if arriving from or having transited through a yellow fever endemic country within 6 days of arrival. Must be valid (administered at least 10 days before arrival).
Visa (if required)
If your nationality requires a visa, you must have obtained this in advance unless eligible for visa on arrival.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Have all documents readily accessible in your carry-on luggage, not packed in checked bags. Keep copies of important documents separately from originals.
Check the entry stamp in your passport immediately after receiving it to confirm the number of days granted. If it's less than expected or needed, politely ask the officer if an extension is possible or note that you'll need to apply for one.
Be honest and concise when answering immigration questions. Conflicting information can lead to additional questioning and delays.
Dress appropriately and be courteous with immigration and customs officers. Professional appearance and polite demeanor facilitate smoother processing.
If traveling for business, have your invitation letter and company documentation easily accessible, even if entering on a tourist visa for short business meetings.
Exchange a small amount of currency at the airport for immediate expenses like transportation, as not all services accept credit cards or foreign currency.
Save the immigration officer's phone number or Ministry of Home Affairs contact if you need to extend your stay later.
Take note of your allowed stay duration and plan your departure accordingly. Overstaying can result in fines, deportation, and future entry bans.

Customs & Duty-Free

Namibian customs regulations are designed to prevent illegal importation of goods while allowing reasonable personal items for travelers. All arriving passengers must complete a customs declaration form, declaring items that exceed duty-free allowances or fall into restricted categories. The Namibia Revenue Agency oversees customs enforcement.

Health Requirements

Namibia has specific health requirements for entry, primarily focused on preventing the spread of infectious diseases. Requirements may change based on global health situations, so always check current regulations before travel.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow Fever - Required ONLY if arriving from or having transited through a yellow fever endemic country within 6 days prior to arrival in Namibia. The vaccination must have been administered at least 10 days before arrival. Endemic countries include most of tropical Africa and parts of South America. Valid yellow fever certificate must be presented at immigration. This is strictly enforced.

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Hepatitis A - Recommended for all travelers due to potential exposure through food and water
  • Typhoid - Recommended, especially if visiting smaller cities, rural areas, or staying with friends/relatives
  • Hepatitis B - Recommended for travelers who may have intimate contact with locals or require medical treatment
  • Rabies - Recommended for travelers spending significant time outdoors, working with animals, or in areas with limited access to medical care
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) - Ensure routine vaccinations are up to date
  • Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis - Ensure boosters are current
  • Malaria prophylaxis - While not a vaccination, antimalarial medication is recommended for travel to northern regions including Etosha National Park, Caprivi Strip, and Kavango regions, especially during rainy season (November-May)

Health Insurance

While not mandatory for entry, comprehensive travel health insurance with medical evacuation coverage is strongly recommended. Medical facilities in Windhoek are adequate for routine care, but serious conditions may require evacuation to South Africa. Ensure your insurance covers activities you plan to undertake (safari, adventure sports). Medical care can be expensive and payment is typically required upfront. Keep all receipts for insurance claims.

Current Health Requirements: Check current COVID-19 and other health-related entry requirements before travel, as these can change rapidly. As of late 2024, most COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted, but requirements may be reinstated based on global health situations. Visit the Namibian Ministry of Health and Social Services website or contact the Namibian embassy for the latest requirements. Some travelers may need to show proof of vaccination or negative tests depending on their origin and current disease outbreaks. Register with your embassy upon arrival for health and safety updates.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Namibia has strict requirements for minors (under 18) entering or leaving the country. Children must carry an unabridged/full birth certificate (not abstract/short version) showing both parents' details. If traveling with both parents, both must be present. If traveling with one parent, a notarized affidavit of consent from the non-traveling parent is required, along with a copy of that parent's passport/ID. If traveling with neither parent (guardians, school groups, etc.), notarized consent from both parents plus copies of their IDs/passports is required. If a parent is deceased, a death certificate is needed. If one parent has sole custody, a court order must be provided. These documents must be original or certified copies and in English (or translated). This is strictly enforced and failure to comply results in denied boarding or entry. Adoptive parents must carry adoption papers.

Traveling with Pets

Importing pets to Namibia requires advance planning (at least 6-8 weeks). You need: an import permit from Namibia's Directorate of Veterinary Services (apply before travel), a veterinary health certificate issued within 7 days of travel, proof of current rabies vaccination (administered at least 30 days but not more than 12 months before arrival), treatment for internal and external parasites within 48 hours of departure, and microchip identification. Dogs from rabies-endemic countries may require additional quarantine or blood tests. Certain breeds may be restricted. Pets must enter through designated ports of entry. Airlines have their own requirements for pet travel. Upon arrival, pets are inspected by veterinary officials at the airport. Keep all original documentation accessible. Contact the Directorate of Veterinary Services well in advance: vetservices@mawf.gov.na

Extended Stays

If you need to stay longer than your initial entry permit allows, you must apply for an extension before your current authorization expires. Visit the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security in Windhoek (Cohen Building, Kasino Street) with your passport, proof of sufficient funds, accommodation details, and reason for extension. Extensions are not guaranteed and are granted at the discretion of immigration officials. Apply at least one week before your current permit expires. Overstaying without authorization results in fines (approximately NAD 2,000-4,000), possible detention, deportation, and future entry bans. For long-term stays (work, study, residence), you must apply for appropriate visas/permits which require different documentation and processing times. These cannot be applied for while in Namibia on a tourist visa - you must apply from your home country before traveling.

Business Visitors

Business visitors attending meetings, conferences, or conducting business negotiations can typically enter on a tourist visa if from visa-free countries, provided the stay is short (under 90 days) and no employment or paid work is undertaken. Carry documentation including invitation letters from Namibian companies, conference registration, or business meeting schedules. For actual employment, work permits are required and must be obtained before arrival - these cannot be obtained while in Namibia on a tourist visa. Work permit applications are complex and require company sponsorship. Business visitors should not engage in activities that could be construed as employment without proper work authorization.

Transit Passengers

Passengers transiting through Hosea Kutako International Airport without leaving the airport transit area generally do not need a visa if continuing their journey within 24 hours and holding confirmed onward tickets. However, if you need to collect luggage, change terminals, or leave the airport, you may need to go through immigration and may require a visa depending on your nationality. Overnight transits typically require going through immigration. If in doubt, contact your airline or the Namibian embassy before travel. Transit areas have limited facilities, so plan accordingly for long layovers.
